How A Group Of Breakaway Clubs Could Change The Football World Forever
When it comes to football, news doesn't get much bigger than this. A breakaway group of Europe's elite clubs has decided to form their own league called the European Super League. Many fans and critics including Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, and Roy Keane have constantly been condemning this project, but are they right?
On Sunday, the 18th of April, the New York Times reported that 12 footballing giants were planning on creating a league to rival the UEFA Champions League. These clubs are English heavyweights Manchester City, United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham. From Spain and Italy are Barca, Real Madrid, Athletico, Juventus, Inter, and AC Milan.
The very next day, all 12 of these clubs confirmed it and released a joint press release introducing the competition format wherein there will be fifteen founding clubs (12 have already been announced) and five invitational clubs annually and it will use a league method before advancing to a knockout phase.
According to the official press release, The European Super League is planning on holding talks with UEFA and FIFA in order to get it going. However, both FIFA and UEFA were not impressed with this and are taking extreme measures to make sure this does not go ahead.
UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin announced that all the clubs who are part of the Super League and their players will be banned from all UEFA competitions and the players may not be allowed to represent their countries for the World Cup.
The English Premier League has also been busy as they have scheduled a meeting to be held this thursday between the fourteen clubs who are not involved as there have been multiple sides calling for the six clubs involved in the super league to be disqualified.
The main reason that fans are against this however, isn't because of the fact that all these these teams are receiving 3.5 Billion dollars for joining this competition but because of how these big teams are trying set up their own league in which they can't be relegated.
Boris Johnson, the UK Prime Minister has made it clear that he will do everything in his power to stop it. All English Club Supporter Trusts feel betrayed and even players are criticizing it as Bruno Fernandes has been the first of many players of the clubs which are involved to criticize it.
But to end this article is an extract from the official Premier League statement which in my opinion begs the most valid point.
"Fans of any club in England and across Europe can currently dream that their team may climb to the top and play against the best. We believe that the concept of a European Super League would destroy this dream." -Premier League Statement
